HALL OF HOLLOW SOULS: Explained
MAYBE
Produced by MAYBE
Guitar by TAJ ABBOTT
MAYBE is a beat I heard randomly on Soundcloud one night when I was depressed. I remember hearing it and leaving it on repeat for hours.
I eventually wrote some lyrics to it and reached out to see if they would like to be on the album.
It’s a very sad song about being single again after being in love and trying your hardest to let go, whilst also realising that time is short. It’s about not giving up even if your heart is heavy, and no matter how hard you try to move on you keep falling deeper in love, to the point your looking back and blaming yourself for it not working out.
The song eventually comes to the realisation that this is the root cause of feeling suicidal. You would rather not live in heartache. It’s a sad but true realisation. It still brings hope through saying
"Maybe I’ll see you again."
'Maybe' is something I would say on text when someone wants to meet up and I want to say yes, but they have hurt me so much that I question whether that would be good for either of us, to keep something going that clearly isn’t working out. If you love someone enough you’ll let them go.
Not long after I recorded this I bumped into TAJ. It was still dark and I couldn’t recognise him as my vision is very blurry from my brain abnormality. At the time, I was listening to the demo in my headphones.
He was outside smoking and I said I would come back out but didn’t as I could no longer be around smokers from being pregnant. It felt like at the time other people's addictions were hindering me from being able to even socialise with people, even though I had broken out of this lifestyle myself.
I felt like I was trapped on my own plane, and kept listening to the song, and felt sad that I couldn’t be around people because of this.
I eventually asked TAJ if he wanted to be involved in the album and he agreed. This was the first song I showed him on the album and he recorded riffs straight away. There wasn’t anything else I needed to do. The addition of his guitar felt natural and necessary to explain the song.
TAJ's input-
“Ever since I first saw ICEY perform, I wanted to do a collab so I was honoured to be asked to play some guitar for this wonderful track.
I wanted to make sure that I was just adding extra atmosphere and not trying to draw focus away from the original track. So I just played how I felt and lost myself in the moment.
ICEY took my noodling and made the track take on a whole new level. I'm proud to be part of such a strong artistic project from an artist that has created a raw, honest and individual style. This album is on regular rotation at home.”
